how to study smart
Understanding is the key
Some students try to memorize everything they read without trying to understand.Students end up failing a test that they claim they studied hard for but the truth is they never understood the materials. If you study to understand you can answer any question on a particular topic. Once you understand a concept you can explain it very well.
Use different materials
Do not rely on notes from the lecture or from your book. Use other materials apart from your notes. You will get a thorough understanding of the topic when you use more than one sources.
Take breaks
Breaks are important during study session because it helps you to retain information better. Studying for prolong period will make you feel overwhelm and your brain will explode.
Learn the same information in a variety of ways
The research (Willis, J. 2008) shows that different media stimulate different parts of the brain. The more areas of the brain that are activated, the more likely it is that you’ll understand and retain the information
Sit at the front of the class
If you get to choose where you sit during class, grab a seat at the front. Studies show that students who sit at the front tend to get higher exam scores
Don’t multitask
The data is conclusive: Multitasking makes you less productive, more distracted, and dumber. The studies even show that people who claim to be good at multitasking aren’t actually better at it than the average person.
Use All Your Senses
Abstract ideas are difficult to memorize because they are far removed from our senses. Shift them closer by coming up with vivid pictures, feelings and images that relate information together. When I learned how to do a determinant of a matrix, I remembered the pattern by visualizing my hands moving through the numbers, one adding and one subtracting.
Learning is in Your Head
Having beautiful notes and a perfectly highlighted textbook doesn’t matter if you don’t understand the information in it. Your only goal is to understand the information so it will stick with you for assignments, tests and life.
Explain things to others
It helps you get things clearer in your head if you try to explain your answers verbally to people who do not know much about the subject. Your parents and annoying siblings could be useful for this
Test your teachers
Question your teachers before an exam, make sure you know exactly what will be covered and what type of questions you should expect. They may have some practice papers you can try first.
Reward yourself
When you complete one of the major goals you set for yourself, give yourself a reward: take a walk, watch a TV show, talk with a friend.
Study your most difficult subjects first
You are most alert when you first sit down to study. You’ll feel better getting the worst out of the way and you won’t be tempted to spend all your time on your easier or favorite subjects.
